I do not think direct answers will help this student in the long run. I would expect at least a little effort from his side (for loop?).
I agree with Ingo's answer to either give stupid answers, or approaches that will be valid, but is not the direct answer his teacher wants to see.eg.:
v=1:100
s=dot(v,v)

Very impressive!

Here is my method.

f = @(n)(1/6*n*(n+1)*(2*n+1));
f(100)
ans = 3.3835e+05

Note this is "better" than
f = @(n)(n*(n+1)*(2*n+1)/6);
because the first way changes the answer from an integer to floating point.
