Octave 4.0.0 in Mint 18.3 the ubiquitous warnings

As a common example:

warning: missing semicolon near line 80, column 11 in file
warning: called from
    plot at line 215 column 3
    myroutine at line 87 column 23
warning: missing semicolon near line 86, column 9 in file
warning: concatenation of different character string types may have
unintended consequences

Now these are the private internal plot routines, and these are appearing

warning ("off", "Octave:language-extension");
warning ("off", "Octave:mixed-string-concat");

Seems to work for one or two calls, but gets reset from within to "on".

Any thoughts most appreciated.
