Re: Octave 4.2 freezes on my Mac

Dipankar “Dipu” Ganguly
I installed Octave 4.2 on my Mac running OS 10.12.3. It freezes regularly and just shows the Mac beach ball. This is making it unusable. Is there a fix?

Thanks.

Dipu

Hi,

I found an old mex routine, written in fortran, that that extracts
fatigue load cycles from time series. I believe that it used to work
with matlab on windows and some linux/unix platform.

My plan is now to try to get it up running again in Octave. While
searching the internet for related info, I would very much appreciate
any useful input, ideas, suggestions ........

/Lars

If your octave is build on top of qt5 (which is actually good because qt4 has many bugs) then probably not, see [1],[2].

With MacPorts and then using the Octave icon (It just has three squares) in the Applications directory within the MacPorts folder.

Dipu,

What does "port installed octave” say?

In other words do you have the default variant or something one off.

Where do I launch “port installed octave” from? The Command Window within 4.2’s IDE?

Re: Octave 4.2 freezes on my Mac

Marius Schamschula-5
Dipu,

Looks like you have the current default variant installed. You might want to open a ticket at trac.macports.org, so the package maintainer will be aware of it.

I’ve not run into this problem myself. The only difference is that I use +atlas rather than +accelerate, which will unlikely to cause your issue.

Of course, I rarely use the GUI anymore. I tend to you Jupyter (with the octave kernel) as my front end.

Re: Octave 4.2 freezes on my Mac

Dipankar “Dipu” Ganguly
I use Jupyter 4.3.1 as well  for iPython work and would love to learn what you did to get the Octave kernel installed. I am using Anaconda Navigator 1.3.1. Is there way to use Octave from iPython? One of my clients is using Octave to get around Matlab’s steep prices. I would like to create a situation where I can go back and forth between iPython and Octave. I prefer iPython for my own work.

My computer is a 2013 13” MacBook Pro Retina running OS 10.12.3.

Thanks.

Re: Octave 4.2 freezes on my Mac

Marius Schamschula-5
Dipu,

Nothing special. I installed MacPorts py27-notebook to get jupiter. Then I got the kernel from https://github.com/Calysto/octave_kernel.

The only issue here is that I ended up using pip rather than MacPorts to install the missing pieces for the octave kernel (mixing the two is rarely a good idea). One of these days I’ll write a Portfile or two...
