Mailing list for CVS activity

Rafael Laboissiere
Dear Octave developers,

Does a mailing list for automatic notification of CVS activity for Octave
exist?  If not, it would be great to create one with public archive. Also,
the messages could be in the same format as JWE uses, i.e. a ChangeLog
excerpt followed by a unified context patch.

FWIW, in the octave-forge project we are using syncmail in CVSROOT/loginfo
to send notifications to the octave-cvs mailing list.

All the best,

No.

Why is it needed?

I don't put anything in the cvs log when I check in changes, and
sometimes the ChangeLog entries for a batch of changes are checked in
separately from the source changes, which might also be checked in in
several chunks.  So it is not clear to me when mail should be sent.

Also, I don't have time to do the work to set all this up.

Subscribers get automatic notification when anything is committed to the CVS
repository.  This makes it easy to follow the upstream development.  Also,
the public archive is useful for looking at the changes.  We are doing this
for octave-forge and I find it very handy (See
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_id=33111).  Of course,
YMMV.

Sending mail at each CVS commit is fine.

It is just a matter of creating a new mailing list at octave.org and adding
a single line to CVSROOT/loginfo, like the following (example taken from the
octave-forge repository):

^octave  /cvsroot/sitedocs/CVSROOT/cvstools/syncmail -u %{sVv} [hidden email]
