My antivirus program does not allow me to pkg install -forge io

Mariano
Hello,
I am running octave 5.1.0 64 bits on Windows 10-64 bits.
When trying to install io I get the output pasted below. I also get a
warning message of TrendMicro about a conftest.exe

I would not like to stop my antivirus to install anything.
Any idea?
Thanks
Mariano

>> pkg install -forge io

I'm not certain if this is the problem, but in several cases on Windows security policies do not allow for compiling/executing code in the user's profile temp space.  The fix has been to set an alternative temp location just for Octave.  I did the following:

Outside of Octave, create a new temp folder for Octave to use (I created C:\Octave\Temp)

In Octave run the following:

>> setenv('tmpdir', 'C:\Octave\Temp')

And then try installation again.

>> pkg install -forge io

If that works, you can add that line to your .octaverc file so it runs every time octave starts (and you won't have to change anything on the rest of your system).  My .octaverc file is located at
 C:/users/<username>/.octaverc

To check current setting:

>> tempdir
ans = c:\Octave\Temp\

Thanks for the answer. It did not work, though. It is a problem with the
antivirus. Trenmicro thinks that conftest.exe is a ransomware virus, and
won't allow me to run it.

ok. it's likely you could figure out how to whitelist it somehow.  don't know your specific product, but if you whitelist a new temp folder, set that as tempdir just for octave's pkg install, then change back and remove the whitelist, it should minimize the amount of time you have something 'unprotected' on your system. You'll have to verify afterward that everything in the package runs, but i think that is likely.  one example of whitelisting instructions can be found here:

I don't know if trendmicro has some sort of file submittal portal for it to correct the false positive.

Thanks a lot for the new answers.
What I finally did is the following: I tested both io-2.4.13.tar.gz and
conftest.exe with virustotal.com and both obtained a perfect score of 0
positives, so I decided to trust. I changed my trendmicro setteings from
hypersensitive to normal. And it worked!

Glad it worked out. You might not be the only person running into this issue, if you have a support login I think we'd appreciate it of you could submit to their false positive reporting tool.

Re: My antivirus program does not allow me to pkg install -forge io

It is a university computer, so I have not access to a support login.
Anyway, the problem was the "hypersensitive" settings. With "normal"
settings, there was no problem. I suppose that "hypersensitive" would just
not allow to run any strange exe.
Thanks again for the help.
