package install error

Clinton Winant
Trying to install package signal, this requires various other package
which, in turn require package struct.  When attempting to install
package struct:

octave:1> pkg install struct-1.0.10.tar.gz
make: /usr/bin/mkoctfile: Command not found
make: *** [fields2cell.oct] Error 127
'make' returned the following error: make: Entering directory
`/tmp/oct-dYlbKf/struct-1.0.10/src'
/usr/bin/mkoctfile -s fields2cell.cc
make: Leaving directory `/tmp/oct-dYlbKf/struct-1.0.10/src'
error: called from `pkg>configure_make' in file
/usr/share/octave/3.6.2/m/pkg/pkg.m near line 1391, column 9

octave:1> pkg install struct-1.0.10.tar.gz
make: /usr/bin/mkoctfile: Command not found
make: *** [fields2cell.oct] Error 127
'make' returned the following error: make: Entering directory

Other package install have failed because of missing dependencies, but
not in this way.  Suggestions to either [hidden email]   or
[hidden email]   will be appreciated

linux 12.10    octave 3.6.2

Why not simply "apt-get install octave-signal" from the Ubuntu repositories?

See the Octave FAQ:

Seems to me that the mkoctfile command was not found.

Download the following packages and install them in the octave terminal. Make sure you are in  directory where the downloaded files are located.

octave:1> pkg install general-1.3.2.tar.gz
octave:2> pkg install struct-1.0.10.tar.gz
octave:3> pkg install miscellaneous-1.2.0.tar.gz
octave:4> pkg install control-2.4.1.tar.gz
octave:5> pkg install specfun-1.1.0.tar.gz
octave:6> pkg install optim-1.2.2.tar.gz

that is installation and compilation from sources.

Likely it is better to look for already build packages for the used
platform (any Linux flavour, Windows, OSX, Cygwin) install it
and just "pkg load struct"
